I just wrapped up a fantastic two-day Emotional Intelligence (EIQ) workshop, and one participant's story perfectly illustrated why EIQ is non-negotiable for leadership success.
We all know the saying: Emotional Intelligence is more important than IQ.
But the reality is, success isn't about just one or the other
It's the powerful combination of both!
The Case in Point: The Smart Manager
A participant shared a story about a manager
A very clever chap with a PhD and immense technical expertise.
The perfect candidate for leadership Right?
Unfortunately, no.
Despite his incredible IQ (head knowledge), he was unable to connect and influence those around him.
He struggled with empathy, managing team dynamics, and providing motivating feedback.
Simply put, he wasn't a people-leader.
The result? He eventually moved to a new role that required his deep technical expertise but minimal team management.
His brilliant mind found success, but his leadership potential was ultimately limited by his undeveloped EQ.
The Takeaway
Your technical skills (IQ) get you in the door, but your ability to manage yourself and your relationships (EQ) determines how far you will rise, especially in leadership.
True workplace success is the harmonious blend of:
1. High IQ: The ability to solve complex problems.
2. High EQ: The ability to manage self and connect with others.
Are you investing in both? What's one area of your Emotional Intelligence you're currently focusing on developing?
